A Simple Formula for Success in College

28 Feb

As you learn in every introductory sociology course in the country, we all play many roles; son or daughter, employee, neighbor, boss, adversary, etc. The role of student can be  especially   particularly  strange for  people  who return to college as an adult.  But, it is a role in which we  can certainly  be successful if we  adhere to  a few simple rules.

1. Whether you enroll in a traditional or an online degree~ online college } program, get to know some of your fellow students .  It will make  college much more  enjoyable , and you can  assist  each other.

2. There is no substitute for making a strong start.  Limiting yourself to  two courses  initially is  almost certainly  a good idea, as is avoiding any  classes with which you expect to have difficulty . After you have had a good semester you can carry a more challenging academic load.

3. Register for your  courses  as soon as  you can  . That way , you are more likely to be able to get the courses and the schedule that  you want . You’ll also  have the opportunity  to purchase  textbooks  and get an early start on your reading, which is always a good idea.

4. Be sure you get to know and spend time with your academic advisor. Be candid with him or her about your educational objectives, career goals, strengths, and  biggest potential weaknesses .  If your advisor is not  helpful, ask for  another advisor immediately.  Do not wait.

5. Obtain the syllabi for your courses as early as you can, and chart all of your major  exams and papers on a large calendar. Then, use the calendar to  put together  a daily study schedule that will  give you  adequate time to complete your assignments on schedule, without undue pressure .

6. Let your family and friends know that you are returning to college and tell them what you  think additional  education can do for you.  If those closest to you know how much additional education means to you they will be less likely to be hurt or offended   if your academic responsibilities sometimes have to be your highest priority.

If you adhere to these six ï»¿ï»¿rules ï»¿ï»¿and approach your return to education with confidence and a good work ethic , you are almost  assured of achieving  ï»¿ your goals.
